Part of an international network of 90 cities, MIAMI SOUP is a grassroots model for funding small to medium-sized projects designed to enhance the quality of community life. MIAMI SOUP is a convivium of neighbors enjoying a simple supper of soup, salad, bread, and beverage that generates a profit to be invested back in the community. The SOUP model combines the best of the eating philosophies of Slow Food with the fund-raising approach of Kickstarter.

Along with the purchase of the meal, each attendee receives a vote to cast in favor of a proposal for neighbor improvement. The income from the meal becomes part of a grant awarded that very night at the discretion of the dinner guests. MIAMI SOUP is more than food for thought because it enables ideas to be transformed into reality and empowers positive change in a single neighborhood.

Why do we do it?

Independent funding for local projects. MIAMI SOUP eliminates the anonymity of Internet funding and directly connects the funder to project manager allowing people to not give money, but lend a hand.

Sparks dialogue about the availability of private and public funding. MIAMI SOUP is a micro-grant that helps people get projects started. Keeping in mind, “you don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”

Unfettered by the restrictions laid out by private and governmental grants, MIAMI SOUP is free to award and help implement projects. MIAMI SOUP is the fertile ground for seeds of change.

MIAMI SOUP is an intentionally simple and non-bureaucratic format for the implementation of change at the local level. The setting of a shared meal encourages the open exchange of ideas, the vision for doing, and the funding to make it happen. MIAMI SOUP not only raises money, it provides the pathway to build a network of support that reaches beyond purely monetary assistance. It is “friendraising” at best. Think of MIAMI SOUP as an open platform to discuss new and ongoing projects with audiences, meet new collaborators, and share ways of working together to transform ideas into reality. MIAMI SOUP “feeds ideas” to elevate the quality of neighborhood living. MIAMI SOUP is supported by the Knight Foundation.
